About

About Chelsea Yacht Club

Chelsea is an 'off the beach' sailing club traditionally catering to dinghy and catamaran classes, and currently broadening its focus to support local paddle boarders, kayaks, wind surfers and SUPs. Learn to Sail classes are on offer in the primary school age 'Tackers' Program, through to adult Start Sailing and Better Sailing courses. Membership fees are reduced for participants of 'learn to sail' programs.

On most Saturday mornings, you can arrange to a Try Sailing Experience with a $10 SailPass ticket that covers you for insurance purposes and lets you get on a boat with a qualified buddy to see whether you like the experience.

Our clubhouse is a multi story building with boat storage and change rooms on the ground level, a bar, balcony, canteen and hall facilities on the second level, and a race control tower on the third level. The bar is open year round on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 5:00pm. and is well supported by a growing Social Membership.

The view from the deck on a summer afternoon is special. From our situation in the middle of the long beach, with Frankston and the peninsula sweeping away to the south, and Mordialloc rounding up to Ricketts Point to the north, there isn’t a better view of the bay.

Boat classes sailing at Chelsea include: Sabres, Pacers, Javelins, Impulses, Lasers, LW Sharpies, Optimists, and various catamarans. All levels of sailing ability are catered for, and the members are ready to assist the inexperienced.

Volunteering at CYC

There are other opportunities to engage in the life of a sailing club beyond actually sailing and enjoying the spectacular views. Race Officers are people who have an interest in sailing but want to participate in another facet of the sport. They are essential for our sailing program. Race Officers may operate rescue boats, set courses on the water and control the starting line. They may control the event from the tower: keeping abreast of incoming weather conditions; maintaining radio communications with on-water craft; evaluating handicaps; ensuring the safety of all participants.

Those who might be interested in becoming a Race Officer include parents who may have limited experience with sailing and want to contribute to the sport, volunteers at yacht clubs, and sailors who no longer actively participate in the sport. Australian Sailing has developed a framework of accredited training which the club will support suitable candidates to undertake.

Chelsea Yacht Club is about sailing, and helping our community to make the most of the beautiful Chelsea foreshore. Come and join us.
