PART OF OUR FIRST FLEET

Our first season, though very short convinced the members that good racing was not possible with such a motley fleet as ours, and that the adoption of class racing would be in the best interests of the Club. The provision of a suitable Headquarters was also placed high on our list of priorities. To solve the first question as many members as possible would crowd into a couple of cars at weekends and tour the Yacht Clubs from Frankston to Williamstown in order to look at yachts and talk with other sailors.

Finally the Vaucluse Junior Class was selected as it fulfilled most of our requirements in that it was cheap to build and after a capsize could be righted to safety, a matter of paramount importance as any rescue work had to be done by another yacht.

Building now started in earnest and soon we had several boats completed and sailing. In those days the hull was heavy but could stand up to a lot of punishment whilst the completed cost in many cases was under $50.

The provision of a senior class for older and heavier members took more time, but Ron Austin and I during a visit to Sydney called at the Vaucluse Yacht Club and were introduced to the Vaucluse Senior Class by Sil Rohu, the President of the Association and one of the founders of the class. Our report on this yacht was acceptable to our Club members. With the adoption of the V.S. and V.J. classes the Club was committed to class Racing and this has been one of our strengths ever since.
