The 2009/2010 sailing season is now under way and the weather over the first month has been very kind. Fleet numbers have been terrific with over 20 boats out on each of the first two weeks. If you haven’t finished your winter maintenance then hurry up and get down to join the crowd!!
COMMITTEE :
Your committee for 2009/2010 is now in place. Steve Low has moved up to the position of Commodore, James Robinson has been elected to the position of Vice Commodore and Steve Read has also returned to the committee. Our thanks go to retiring Commodore Gavin Rogerson and long time committee member Barry Cady both who have stepped down after many years of service.
We also welcome Donna Halton to the position of Junior Club Captain. Donna replaces Andrew Miller who we would like to thank for his assistance over the past two years.
We currently have the positions of Vice President and Treasurer vacant. These positions are absolutely vital in ensuring your club can remain viable in the short term as well as planning for the future. Barry Wilson has agreed to fill the role of Treasurer until we are able to find a replacement and we thank him for his assistance. The committee would like to hear from any members who are prepared to assist in these roles so please see Ray Layton if you would like to help.
CHELSEA YACHT CLUB REVENUE :
The storm damage caused to our clubhouse is significant and it looks like it may take a couple of months before we are in a position to become fully operational again. A significant problem is that we are unable to hire out the hall and thus we will see a significant drop in revenue over the coming months. The committee would like to ask for the assistance of all members in helping us to manage our cash flows and to minimise the cash drain on our finances. The following are some points that will assist in minimising the impact :
BUILDING WORKS :
While it seems that not very much is happening to rebuild the Club, a whole lot is going on behind the scenes. Our Foreshore Location means a number of authorities other than just the City of Kingston are involved in getting permits to commence the rebuild. Please be patient, it’s a drawn out process with several bureaucratic authorities all wanting a say.
The insurers have appointed a builder and we are happy with the scope of works to be done. The final scope of works will be varied as additional things are found. It appears that the floor will be replaced in the Main Hall as it has suffered extensive water damage since the incident took place. We know there will be some inconvenience to our members once the building works start so can we ask members to please bear with us - it will be a good result in the end.
The damage has necessitated us setting up a temporary race control area between the kitchen and the bar area. It would be appreciated if members would respect the work being undertaken by our volunteers and we would ask that you avoid entering this area at all times.
MEMBERSHIP :
A reminder that membership fees were due by 31/8/2009 – our thanks to those members who have already paid. We would also like to take this opportunity to remind anyone who has overlooked their fees to please arrange for payment to be made as soon as possible.
The committee has decided that as from 1/11/09, unpaid members will not be allocated points for racing results and nor will they be eligible for the members draw on Friday nights.
Please contact Peter Merriner by email pmerriner@optusnet.com.au or telephone 9772 7663 or if you have not received your membership renewal advice.

CYC CANTEEN :
The canteen is up and running again. We would like to thank Kim for soldiering on and enduring the difficulties caused by the storm damage.
GO SAILING WEEKEND :
This Nationally arranged program is scheduled for 8th November. The club will be participating in this event for the first and will be offering sailing opportunities on both Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November. This means that we will be looking for members who are available to help out by assisting interested people/potential new members. We will offer sailing opportunities on Saturday between 10am and 3pm and will also be open on Sunday from 11.00am to 3.00pm so if you want to come down to the club your are more than welcome. Your committee sees this as a strong opportunity to engage new members into the club and is giving the weekend program its full support.
FOAK WEEKEND & OPENING DAY :
This weekend has normally been scheduled for the second weekend in November this being the 7th and 8th November this year and this 2nd Sunday in November has traditionally also been the club’s opening weekend. The yacht club like many other sporting clubs is suffering from a lack of available volunteers and as such the ability to even carry out traditional programs has suffered. Your committee does recognise this loss and is looking at ways to overcome the issue.
The FOAK weekend has been a big event for our club in the past and this year is looking at being no exception. Your support is requested even if you are sailing in the event, and we would encourage this, but any practical help you can provide before and after racing would be appreciated.
Help is needed from volunteers to support our visitors on arrival, staff our tower, workboats, support the canteen and bar and provide general support after racing. Steve Low would love to hear from anyone willing and available to help in any capacity and you can call Steve on 0401 679 848.
The availability of a portable BBQ is first on the list of items needed so that Steve can cook bacon and egg roll fundraising breakfasts each morning. If you can loan the club a BBQ Steve would love to hear from you too.
FIRST AID COURSE :
The club is looking to run a level 2 First Aid Course on 15th November at the clubhouse. The course will commence at 9.00 am and finish around 1.30 pm. Cost of the course is $85.00 for club members who are volunteers within our club. For non volunteers and non club members, the coast is $185. There is also opportunity to participate in the CPR update at a cost of $40. If anyone is interested in completing the course please contact Jim McAlinden 0400 267 894 or by email at training@chelseayachtclub.com.au
