Chelsea Yacht Club
APPLIES FOR LEVEL THREE ACCREDITATION
IN GOOD SPORTS PROGRAM
February 7th 2007
The Chelsea Yacht Club is displaying commitment to responsible alcohol management with an application for Level Three accreditation under the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.
Good Sports is the first nationwide alcohol management program of its kind and is supported by VicHealth, the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) and the Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation. The program was developed following research conducted by the Australian Drug Foundation which indicated that by introducing responsible alcohol management policies, clubs were able to improve membership and enhance viability.
The club is determined to meet the criteria required for the Level Three accreditation.
We now have a written alcohol management policy which includes the sale of low alcohol drinks and soft drinks and a safe transport strategy to ensure our members get home safely. We will provide food when serving alcohol and we will not have an emphasis on alcohol for player awards or fundraising, functions and prizes.
We are confident our efforts will continue to improve the environment at the Club. We are working to ensure the Chelsea Yacht Club is a great place to play and socialise for all members of our community.
The club will be regularly monitored to ensure we comply with the program. This is the responsibility of all members to make sure we do the right thing while we’re enjoying ourselves and having fun.
For more information about the accreditation program speak to Steve Read.

So far I only have four names on the list, we need a minimum of 10 to run the course.

November 2005 Update
The season is underway and hopefully the weather will keep on improving and sailing fleets will increase. The month of November has two busy weekends with two major regattas to be held at Chelsea YC.
The Longbeach regatta was held last Saturday and what a wonderful sight it was. The morning race for Junior and Novice skippers saw many of our trainees sailing their first race as skippers and all did very well. Throughout the morning and mid day saw boats arriving by trailer and water to compete in the afternoons racing. We had 102 boats competing in the afternoon with only slight breezes. A truly great day and many thanks to all the club volunteers, in the tower, on the workboats, the canteen, the BBQ cooks, the bar staff and cleaners, who put many hours into making this day a success.
FOAK REGATTA will be held this weekend, 12th/13th November, in line with our Opening day on the Sunday. Two races will be held both days starting at 11am and 2pm. There will be prize money and T-shirts to give away over the weekend. A sausage sizzle will be held after racing for the sailors and volunteers. Duty rosters will need to be completed and all members are needed to help out.
MEMBERS DRAW: Remember the draw will be held each Friday night in the Members room at 6pm. Nominee member (or spouse/partner/children) must be present at draw and be a current financial member. Winner must present their current membership card. Prize will be $10 and will jackpot each week until there is a winner. The prize will go back to $10 when a winner has been drawn. So pay those fees and come to the Club each Friday before 6pm for a chat and a drink. October winners were 7/10. Jessica Harrison, 14/10. Mark Davis, 21/10. Allan Barrow,
28/10. Chris Wardle, and winner for 4/11 was Chris French. Jackpot is now $60.
SOCIAL: Over the last two months the club has had two enjoyable social days. Firstly the Wine Appreciation day in October was attended by a small group of members. Thanks to Steve and Deb along with Bonbeach Cellars for running the afternoon. Secondly, on Tuesday 1st November, a large gathering attended the club to watch ‘The Diva’ win her third Melbourne Cup. The champagne and beer was flowing, the BBQ was cooking and the kids were having fun in the water, sailing and swimming. Thanks to Felicity and Deb for running the sweeps and to the committee members who worked behind the bar.
Next event is the Christmas Dinner on Saturday 3rd December. Costs will be $25 for Adults and $12 for Children. Flyers will be sent out to class reps and put up around the club and on the web over the next week. The night will start at 6.30pm with activities on the beach for all the kids. Adult’s meal will be turkey, beef and vegetables with plum pudding and custard for sweets. The children will have mini hot dogs, chips and party pies along with ice cream and cake. Hopefully the jolly red man will appear during the evening. Please start organising a table with you class/group today and contact Steve Read 0412 797 425 or Diane Cameron for tickets.
SAILING MEMBERS DRAW – Remember each week when a club boat sails a club race their boat name/sail number will be put into a draw. The draw will take place at Presentation Night and a skipper or crew financial member must be present at the time of the draw. The prize will be $1000 for the winning boat. To enter the draw, the boat is to cross the start line within their division start time and must sign on/off for that race.

October 2005 Update
The official start of sailing season has started and it was disappointing that there was no race due to strong winds. Hopefully next Saturday the weather and winds will be more suitable. Spring racing was very quiet with only a couple of boats venturing out in the water. There was even a couple of eager junior members who sailed in the rain with their eager dads standing in knee deep water watching their sons. The Club also had a small fleet of sailboards on one windy Saturday. Lets hope the clubs sailing fleet numbers increase this season.
MEMBERS DRAW will be held each Friday night in the Members room at 6pm. First draw will be this Friday 7th October 2005.
MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTION FEES are now due. Reminders will be sent out at the end of October. Please remember to bring your invoice and boat registration (if applicable) with you when paying your fees. This makes it easier for the Secretary to process your membership quicker.
SOCIAL: There will be a Wine Appreciation afternoon on Sunday 23rd October, starting at 1pm. Tickets are $20 per person, which includes tasting and nibbles. Please contact Steve Read if wanting to purchase a ticket, before he hunts you down.
The CYC ‘Footy Tipsters’ ran a Grand Final day on Saturday 24th Sept, and watched the big game on the Club’s newly purchased plasma TV. Money was raised on the day and will be used to update some fittings on the club’s sabots. Thanks to Steve, Campbell, Adam, Ron and helpers for running a great day.
SAILING MEMBERS DRAW – Each week when a club boat sails a club race their boat name/sail number will be put into a draw. The draw will take place at Presentation Night and a skipper or crew financial member must be present at the time of the draw. The prize will be $1000 for the winning boat. To enter the draw, the boat is to cross the start line within their division start time and must sign on/off for that race. So the more races you sail, the more tickets will go into the draw. Let’s get those boats out onto the water.
SAILING EVENTS: The club is this year running the Longbeach Regatta, which will be on Saturday 5th November. There will be a Junior skipper race in the morning and 2 races back to back in the afternoon. Notice of race can be found on the Club’s website or on the Club’s notice board. Also Open Day, Four Of A Kind regatta is on the Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th November.
TRAINING commenced with an information session and introduction of the trainers and trainees for this Spring Session last Saturday. We have 28 trainees all keen and ready to get out onto the water. Thanks to a handful of members who have worked many Saturday’s in getting the Pacers and Sabots ready for this season.
NEW ARRIVALS: Congratulations to Blainey & Simon Turner on the arrival of Jackson, to Melissa & Mitch Galland on the arrival of Madison and to Greg & Lyndal Brooks on the arrival of Erin.

December Update
Lo! and Behold! It is nearly Christmas and many of our members are setting off soon to sail in National titles around Australia and others are venturing off for a break from sailing and spending time with their families during the break. There are no titles being run at Chelsea this Christmas, although some work boat volunteers are needed during the Christmas and New Year break for the Sharpie Nationals at Blairgowrie. CYC is sending Harry Flint down to help out, so if you wish to volunteer please contact Campbell Simmons on 0408894595.
Twilight racing will be on this Wednesday, if the weather is sailable, last day of training and sailing will be this week. Sailing returns on Saturday 15th January 2005 and training returns 29th January 2005.
Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and ‘Good Luck’ to all members sailing in titles.
**Members: Please note that if you are sailing in titles over Christmas and you have not paid your fees or you need an ‘ayf’ number for a crew or family member, please contact ‘the secretary’ before the 22nd december, so i can process your details with yachting victoria.
SOCIAL: The Christmas Dinner was held on Saturday 4th December and was a night of fun, laughter and games. The night started with a fierce game of beach cricket run by Ian and Linda Morris with most children having a go. This followed by a treasure hunt in the sand for small plastic moulds. The 8 – 12 years old were most successful in finding all their shapes but the 7 and under found all but two shapes (sorry Lyn, hopefully will find them another day), although Joshua Galland did find one of his sand toys he had left in the sand earlier that day. The dinner was delicious and the chefs from each table did a great job serving those at their tables. Santa arrived for a brief visit and all the children were happy he came and even happier when they received their special gift. Thanks to Steve and his band of helpers who set the hall and to Kathie Toft again for her beautiful flowers for the tables.
CYC GOLF: Final game for the year will be at Rosebud on Sunday 19th December and as of Saturday 11th December there was only one place available. Presentation will take place at the club starting at 5.30pm.
≠On a sad note, the Club wishes to pass on their best wishes to Bill Williams, Lynette and Brett on the passing away of Madge. Her friendliness and stories will be sadly missed around the club.
The Committee and members send their best to Hugh Rogerson on a speedy recovery.
November Update
It is good to see our sailing numbers are increasing, and paid memberships are steadily moving up. With Christmas and national titles for many classes getting closer, now is the time to start getting ready for these events. Start making the Christmas wish list, buy the presents, fix the trailer, trim the sails, practice getting to the race start on time and many more things.
Sailing events at Chelsea happening before Christmas are Saturday 27/11, Carrum SC are racing at Chelsea YC, and Twilight racing will be on Wednesday 8/12 and 15/12. For those wanting to sail on these Wednesdays, please let the Secretary know, so we can cater for the evening after racing.
OPEN DAY – Four Of A Kind (F.O.A.K.) Regatta held on 13th/14th November had a run of bad weather over the weekend. Although there was no racing on the Saturday, the club put on a race for those keen sailors who turned up on the Sunday morning. The afternoon race was run, with the winds slowing down to 15 knots. Although the numbers on the water was small, there were many back on shore that watched the race from the member’s room. The weather deceived many by radiating brilliant sunshine and some had sun burnt faces the next day.
To those who volunteered over the weekend on the workboat, in the car park, in the tower, welcoming guests on Sunday, working in the bar, cleaning the club throughout and helping in the canteen, the Club thanks all of you. Without your help the FOAK regatta would not have run as well as it did.
Membership REMINDERS will be sent out shortly to those who are yet to pay.
SOCIAL: Christmas Dinner for all members and friends is on Saturday 4th December. Numbers for the night need to be finalized by 29th November. Please contact your class rep if you are wanting tickets or contact the Secretary. A flyer is attached with details of cost for the night, and Yes! Santa will be there.
CYC GOLF: On Sunday 21st November, was held at Skye with only a small but keen group. The winners and grinners for the day were, 1st Place Craig Culliton, R/up Adam McGregor, Longest Drive Ian Earle.
Next game will be on Sunday 19th December at Rosebud. 18 holes are to be played, so if you are wanting to play $40 is to be paid to Peter Horne of Ray Layton then put your name on the board (near the bar). Presentation will be held at 5pm back at the Club followed by a delicious spread. Any further details required ask Peter or Ray.
WATER RESTRICTIONS – For those members who may not be aware, the State of Victoria has level 2 water restrictions, and this applies to Yacht clubs as well. The Clubs karcher (water pressure washer) is to be used ONLY for Club workboats and Club training boats. Washing down of member’s sailing boats and cars is not to be done at the Club, please do this at your own homes, in line with level 2 water restriction laws.
OCTOBER 2004
The sailing season is underway with the number of boats increasing, with many completing the ‘to do lists’ before sailing starts. The winds have been light in the first couple of weeks with strong winds finishing off the first month of racing. Training numbers are strong, but help is needed on Saturday mornings on workboats and on the beach with many eager sailors wanting to try their hand at sailing. If you can spare a Saturday morning, please contact the Secretary.
**Sailors please remember that if you wish to have your valuables locked away when sailing, please bring them to the tower, before the afternoon race.
Many thanks to Barry Wilson and Melissa Galland who gave up their time to attend a training session for ‘Top Yacht’, which is the computer program used for all sailing results.
OPEN DAY – Four Of A Kind (F.O.A.K.) Regatta is on Saturday 13th, Sunday 14th November. There will be two races on both days, and members will be needed to volunteer on both days. Rosters will be drawn up for car park duty, workboats, tower and beach patrol. Class reps will be advised of times and duties prior to weekend. The Official Opening of season 2004/05 will take part on Sunday 14th November at 6pm after the Sunday afternoon race.

SOCIAL: The Barn Dance on Saturday 11th September was a hoot of a night, with 15 families attending. The hay bales bought a lot of enjoyment to the kids, although some had a few sneezing problems late at night. Many thanks to Steve Read for organizing a fun family night.
Grand Final Day was another successful day, run by the Footy Tipping organizers and Steve Read. Next year hopefully the AFL Grand Final will be watched at the club on a much larger screen.
Next function will be Christmas Dinner on Saturday 4th December. Prices for the evening, when confirmed, will be published on the website.
CYC GOLF: On Sunday 17th October, the game was held at Cheltenham. Results were:
Winner – Lindsay Simmons, Runner-up – Chris Wardle, Longest Drive – Barry Cady, Nearest to Pin – Tony O’Connell. Next game
